This Matisse pop art piece shows a woman in profile on a black background, her face cut by a strip that has slipped sideways. Across her body float small figures in orange, blue, green and yellow, and big white swirls of paint sit on her like flowers. Little red figures crouch around the edge, and a few colour blocks stand on the left like a quiet nod to Mondrian.
The idea is simple. I imagined Matisse's cut-out dancers leaving the page and landing on a person like tattoos. I wanted something cheerful and a bit strange at once.
This is a hand-finished lithograph with my own acrylic brushstrokes on top. A textured gel goes on white and dries completely clear, which gives the white swirls and the black background real relief. It comes stretched and framed in black, 60x80 cm. Each lithograph has its own serial number and a certificate, and I make each one to order. It is a pop art lithograph that works as statement wall art in a living room, and it also suits a cafe wall.
