In 1991 two hikers in the Alps found a body in melting ice. Ötzi the Iceman is about 5,300 years old, and his skin carries roughly sixty tattoos, simple lines and crosses. People have been marking their own bodies for a very long time, and I doubt it was ever only for decoration.
That is the starting point of Infiniti, a pop art portrait of a woman whose skin is the canvas.
A young woman looks straight out of a black, heavily textured background. A red rose covers one eye, its green stem running off the left edge. Her face is sliced into horizontal strips that have slid out of line, with small black bars on the forehead. Gold paint drips through her hair. Across her chest and shoulders sits a crowd of black-and-white tattoos: two skulls with crossbones, a cross with angels, playing cards, a bottle, a heart, a crowned figure on one forearm. Above the cross runs a line of handwritten words. A thin necklace with clover shapes rests at her throat.
Contemporary pop art still loves a broken face, and artists have been breaking faces for a century. Picasso split a woman's face into sharp pieces in Weeping Woman in 1937. Warhol turned Marilyn into a repeating surface in his 1962 Diptych. In this pop art portrait of a woman the face glitches, but the eye with the rose stays calm. The small coloured blocks on the left are a nod to Mondrian, who was painting rectangles like these in the 1920s and 30s, and I like how that strict grid sits beside a body full of old symbols.
Infiniti is a 2025 original pop art painting, 120x90 cm, and it works as statement wall art in a room with space for a lot of detail.
