In 1970 David Hockney began a double portrait of two friends at home: the fashion designer Ossie Clark and the textile designer Celia Birtwell, with their white cat. He finished Mr and Mrs Clark and Percy in 1971, and it is now in the Tate collection. That is where Relaxation starts. I kept the set-up and turned the volume up until it became statement wall art.
A couple sits on a dark green chesterfield sofa, on a pink floor, in front of a black textured wall. She stretches her legs across the cushions, a cup in her hand. He sits beside her, a cup in his hand. Their faces are blank, and small black bars sit across their bodies, as if the scene had been cleaned up for broadcast. Above them hangs a huge picture in a thick gold frame. In its blue field two dogs are caught in a private moment, censored with black bars too. A small brown dog with wide eyes stands on the pink floor, a synth keyboard lies on the floor in front of the couple, and a plant stands in the corner.
Richard Hamilton's 1956 collage Just what is it that makes today's homes so different, so appealing? is often called one of the first pop art works, and it shows a couple in an interior too. I like that the loudest thing in the room hangs on the wall and nobody on the sofa looks at it. The small colour blocks on the left are a nod to Mondrian.
This original pop art painting is oil and acrylic on stretched canvas, 120 x 90 cm, from 2024, part of my fifth collection, Good luck have fun. It is made for anyone who wants pop art for a living room and doesn't mind a conversation.
