In 1991 two hikers in the Ötztal Alps, on the border between Austria and Italy, found a body in melting ice. It was Ötzi the Iceman, about 5,300 years old. His skin carried around 60 tattoos, groups of simple lines, which makes them some of the oldest we know. Revelation, my pop art portrait of a woman, starts from there. The word comes from the Latin revelare, to unveil, and I took that literally.
She stands in front of a black wall with her arms raised behind her head and her eyes closed. Her hair is built up in thick red and orange strands that rise off the canvas as real relief. Glitch strips cut across her face and slide it sideways. Her body is covered in tattoos: angels, a Madonna and child, an arched window that looks like a cage, and lines of handwritten text. She wears a white top and bottom with a colourful fashion monogram. Behind her, large letters rise from the black surface, and Mondrian-like blocks of green, yellow, white, blue and red sit on the left.
A pop art portrait of a woman usually makes the face a surface. Warhol painted Marilyn Monroe's face over and over in his 1962 Marilyn Diptych until it became a pattern. I went the other way: the face slips and breaks like a bad signal, and the story is written on the body. I like how a strict Mondrian grid from the 1920s sits next to all that ink.
This is original pop art for sale, mixed media wall art from 2025, 120 x 90 cm. It works as art for restaurants and cafés, or in any room that wants a person on the wall.
