In 1883 the painter Ivan Kramskoi painted a woman in a hat with feathers and gave the portrait a title that shrugs: Unknown Woman. It hangs in the Tretyakov Gallery, and nobody has settled who she was. What gets me is her look, proud and a little cold. For me fashion pop art starts with that look.
That portrait is the starting point of this painting. I took her feathered hat and her stare, and dressed her from the street and the fashion house.
My version wears a dark blue cap with a red streetwear box logo and a huge pale yellow plume that drips. Her eyes slide to the side, a small 666 is inked on her cheek, and her face is cut by a strip with pink lips and a black bar. Below it a white bib printed with luxury monograms and flowers is torn into glitch strips. White handwriting runs along a black lace collar down to a red button, and the sleeves are brown with orange fashion-house logos. Pixel squares dot the dark, a white keyhole sits at the bottom right, and the background is scratched into rough relief.
In 1962 Andy Warhol painted thirty-two Campbell's soup cans and put a brand on a gallery wall. I do the same in fashion pop art, but I let the logos tear. The blue and yellow blocks on the left are a nod to Mondrian.
I came from the street, so a box logo on a cap means something to me, and I mix styles. Here a cap, a fashion-house bib and a nineteenth-century hat share one person. This original pop art painting, 120 x 90 cm on canvas from 2022, is contemporary pop art for a living room wall that needs one loud piece.
